Pet Insurance for Your Havanese or Havapoo

We have placed a lot of puppies over the years, and one of the things we have learned is that even the healthiest, most carefully bred puppy can land at the emergency vet for reasons that have nothing to do with genetics. A curious puppy finds a child’s sock on the floor and swallows it. A playful tumble off the couch catches a leg wrong. A puppy decides that a houseplant looks delicious. These things happen in the best homes with the most attentive families, and when they do, the difference between having pet insurance and not having it can be enormous, both financially and emotionally.

This is why pet insurance is not optional for our families. As part of our adoption requirements, every family must either enroll in their own pet insurance policy before bringing their puppy home or activate the complimentary 30-day Trupanion trial that we include with every puppy. We require this because we care deeply about the puppies we place, and we want every family to be in a position to say yes to whatever care their puppy needs without hesitating over the cost.

Why We Require Pet Insurance

We want to be straightforward about why this requirement exists. It is not a formality. Over the years we have heard stories from families, not necessarily our own, who faced an unexpected veterinary situation in those early weeks with a new puppy and were caught without coverage. Emergency veterinary care is expensive. A foreign body removal surgery, which is exactly what happens when a puppy swallows something they should not have, can easily run anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000 or more depending on the situation and your location.

We have done everything in our power to give your puppy the best possible genetic foundation. Our parent dogs are fully health tested and OFA certified, and our puppies leave us vaccinated, dewormed, and vetted. But no amount of careful breeding protects a puppy from the unpredictable.

The Trupanion 30-Day Trial

The trial activates at the time your puppy goes home, which means coverage is in place during that first critical month when your puppy is adjusting to a new environment, meeting new people and other pets, and doing all the exploratory things that puppies do. That window matters. We have seen enough situations over the years to know that the first month home is often when the unexpected happens.

To activate your Trupanion trial, simply follow the instructions included in your puppy’s welcome packet. There is no credit card required to start the trial, and no obligation to continue after the 30 days.

Why Getting Coverage Early Matters So Much

This is one of the most important things to understand about pet insurance, and we tell every family the same thing: the best time to get coverage is before anything goes wrong. Here is why that matters.

Pet insurance, like human health insurance, does not cover pre-existing conditions. A condition that is diagnosed or shows symptoms before your policy start date will be excluded from coverage. That means if your puppy develops a health issue before you enroll, that condition will likely never be covered by any insurer, even if you sign up immediately after.

When you enroll a healthy puppy with no medical history, you are essentially locking in clean coverage. Everything that happens after your start date is eligible. Every illness, every accident, every unexpected trip to the emergency vet. The longer you wait, the more chances there are for something to appear in your puppy’s record that becomes a permanent exclusion.

What to Look for in a Pet Insurance Policy

This covers unexpected injuries, illnesses, and emergencies, which is exactly the category that matters most for a new puppy. Some policies offer accident-only coverage at a lower price, but we recommend full accident and illness coverage.

Some policies have an annual deductible, meaning you pay once per year and everything after that is covered. Others use a per-condition deductible, meaning you pay a deductible for each new condition but not again for the same condition.

Most policies offer 70%, 80%, or 90% reimbursement. Higher reimbursement means higher premiums, but also means less out-of-pocket cost when something significant happens.

Some policies have unlimited coverage, which means no cap on how much they will pay. Others cap at a set dollar amount annually. For a breed with a lifespan of 12 to 16 years, unlimited coverage is worth considering.

Most policies have a short waiting period for accidents, often 24 to 48 hours, and a longer one for illnesses, typically 14 days. Understanding the waiting periods helps you know exactly when you are covered.

All pet insurance excludes pre-existing conditions. Beyond that, exclusions vary. Read the exclusions carefully. A policy that looks affordable may have exclusions that make it far less useful in practice.

Veterinary Freedom

Most pet insurance in the United States works on a reimbursement basis, meaning you pay the vet at the time of service and submit a claim for reimbursement. Because of this model, you can typically use any licensed veterinarian in the country, including specialists and emergency clinics.

Trupanion also offers a direct pay option at participating practices, which means they pay the vet directly so you only owe your portion at the time of service.

A Note on Wellness Plans

Many pet insurance providers offer optional wellness plan add-ons that reimburse routine care like annual exams, vaccinations, flea prevention, and dental cleanings. Whether a wellness plan makes financial sense depends on your specific costs and your vet’s pricing.

The core accident and illness policy is where the real value lives, and that is where we recommend putting your budget if you have to choose.

Comparing Your Options

There are a number of well-regarded pet insurance providers worth looking at alongside Trupanion. Each has its own structure, pricing model, and strengths. We are not here to tell you which one to choose, but we do encourage families to compare at least two or three options before deciding, looking carefully at deductible type, reimbursement percentage, annual limits, waiting periods, and exclusions side by side.

The most important thing is that you have active coverage from the day your puppy comes home. Whether you choose Trupanion and continue past the trial, transition to another provider, or come in with your own policy already in place, what matters to us is that your puppy is protected.

Our Ask Is Simple

We put enormous love and care into every puppy we raise. The health testing, the socialization, the nutrition, the time, it all goes into giving your puppy the best possible start. Pet insurance is the piece of that puzzle that you control after your puppy comes home. It is the thing that makes sure a sock, a stumble, or a sick day at two in the morning does not become a moment where you have to weigh your puppy’s care against your finances.

If you have questions about the Trupanion trial, how to activate it, or how to think through your insurance options, we are always happy to talk. This is exactly the kind of thing we are here for, and we would rather you call us with a question now than wish you had coverage later.
